FIRE-N-SPICE
Featuring Joico Global Brand Education Expert, Ricardo Santiago

The newest look to drop this fall? A beautifully burnished copper creation from Joico Global Brand Education Expert, Ricardo Santiago, using the hot, new FALLyage technique: By pairing Balayage with his favorite “Powerlights” foils, Ricardo nails a fiery look that trades traditional darker-for-fall hair color for something gutsy and gorg.

A FIRESIDE CHAT WITH RICARDO
“I see a brighter fall ahead,” predicts our powerhouse pro of the hair color coming down the pike this autumn. “After the last couple of years, I feel like we could all use something to revitalize us. Typically, I elect to go for darker/richer tones for fall; but this year I’m keeping things rich but also bright!” How does Ricardo achieve this dynamic look? With FALLyage, a combo of brighter hand-painted pieces paired with lighter fall tones that are foiled in. “Using them together, I’m able to create a really beautiful, fall-inspired red/copper Balayage.”
RICARDO’S START-AND-FINISH TRICK
The key to bringing out vibrancy and shine before every color service? Starting and ending with Defy Damage ProSeries:
- Pro Series 1 is a dry aerosol spray that is applied in short bursts to dry hair prior to any chemical service. It’s designed to protect bonds in the hair from degradation that occurs during color, lightening, perming, and straightening services. Big bonus? There’s no need to reformulate your color, adjust your developer, or change your process timing–just shake the can vigorously, apply to clean dry hair then begin the color service.
- When processing is complete, rinse and apply Defy Damage Shampoo, followed by Pro Series 2 for five minutes. This game-changing product will restore and regenerate bonds while locking in color.

Pro tip from Ricardo: “I did a combination of my “Powerlights” and Balayage to create a light of brightness around the perimeter; as well as some soft Balayage panels throughout the interior for added depth and dimension,” explains Ricardo.
FOR THE POWERLIGHTS
- Start by sectioning out approximately a one-inch perimeter around the entire head and clip the rest of the hair up and away.
- Proceed by babylighting that perimeter for a soft-yet-bright finish around the face.
- Drop interior hair once foils are completed, and continue to add a few extra highlights up the side sections and into the top section. (To create some depth between the face frame and internal foils, be sure to leave out approximately ½-to-one-inch behind the perimeter foils, before adding in the additional foils.)
- Once the foils are completed, move on to applying the Balayage, alternating between just a tip-out in some sections, and painting up to the root for others.
- Once painting is finished, wrap in Balayage film and process.
- Once processing is complete, shampoo and prepare glaze formula. Section out the one-inch perimeter again and apply glaze formula to the entire interior. Process for five minutes before pulling it through the perimeter and processing for an additional five minutes.
- Wash and condition with Defy Damage ProSeries 2.
