‘DOS THROUGH THE DECADES

female models

In celebration of National Women’s History Month, join us for a trip down memory lane, as we revisit some of the most iconic hairstyles of the last 100 years. These fan-favorite looks have endured, morphed, and reimagined themselves throughout the decades; always withstanding the test of time. Come along on this journey of joi….

THE FLOWER CROWN

Worn regally by Mary Todd Lincoln and Frida Kahlo, this tiara of blooms has come full circle – showing up at music festivals, rocking a Boho vibe, and even taking its place at the Met Gala.

BRAIDS

From cornrows to Bantu knots, box braids to flat twists, these elaborately and intricately woven rows of hair are as popular in pop-culture America as they were in early Egypt – both for their cultural significance, as well as their protective nature.

THE BOB

The lacquered locks of the 20’s embraced this extreme, chin-length cut with well-defined bangs – known for grazing the eyes and framing the face. Vidal Sassoon took it from there with another liberated look of the 70s; and it eventually became a trademark haircut of one of the fashion-mag world’s most famous editors.

MARCEL WAVE

Replacing pin curls, this smooth-to-the-head wave was created with French hairstylist Francois Marcel Grateau’s first iteration of today’s flat iron – a tool designed to electrically straighten texture in hair.

THE AFRO

The ultimate symbol of natural hair, the Afro grows up and out – not only defying gravity, but also serving as showcase for the unique follicular structure of Black hair. Undefined by one set look – we’ve seen every length, shape, and texture on the map – this style is a tribute to the freedom and power of embracing racial identity.

MESSY UPDO

French blonde movie stars of the 60’s trademarked this sexy pile of hair atop the head; but it famously reemerged years later on everyone’s favorite red-suited lifeguard. Today, you’ll see version after version created on Instagram (with plenty of tricks and tips to get height and volume).

THE PIXIE

Leave it to the waif-ish models of the 60’s to rock a super-abbreviated cut with plenty of wispy ends; and lead scores of women to follow suit.

HOLLYWOOD GO LIGHTLY

Classic and coquettish, this diamond-decked chignon put updos on the map – and not just at Breakfast time.

PLATINUM POWER

A snowy, white, flossy confection, platinum hit the silver screen with pin-up girls and sex-pot movie stars (particularly the one who loved to visit the White House). But this cooler-than-cool blonde isn’t going anywhere – as people are still going “gaga” for the edgy, icy shade.

THE FLIP

This silhouette of the late 50’s/early 60s – still popular today — featured flipped-out ends created with hot rollers or curling irons, sprayed into place to last at least a day.

THE FEATHERED CROP

When one of the world’s most famous skaters debuted her short wedge haircut that spun and moved as gracefully on the ice as she did, the world fell in love. And we went just as crazy for version 2.0 in the ‘80s, when an equally beloved princess sported her own blonde take.

THE FIVE-POINT CUT

Vidal Sassoon introduced his five-point cut in the 1970s (a close crop, pointedly notched above each ear, with a W shape at the nape); it had women reaching for a blow-dryer, which in turn freed them from long, weekly salon sets.

THE SHAG

The Shag reached icon status when one of Hollywood’s most celebrated actresses-turned-activists wore this multi-layered wispy look in the movie, Klute. But the look became truly evergreen when a famed New York hairstylist started charging $600 for the look in the 1980s – re-popularized in You’ve Got Mail — for scores of her clients.

MOHAWK

This punk-rock icon came to fame in the 80s, but the origins of its shaved sides and upswept crown bear a resemblance to the hairstyles of the Pawnee Tribe (and not, as myth would have it, the Mohicans).

THE RACHEL

It was a TV trend that quickly morphed into an international hair phenomenon, sparking a fever among “friends” wanting deliberate, bi-level shag styles.

NATURAL HAIR

This is the term for chemically breaking down the keratin protein bonds that provide structure to curly hair; and relaxed hair is all about the freedom to manipulate one’s ‘do in a way that honors your own inimitable style and personality. We’ve seen these magnificent natural curls on superstar singers for decades– and the grand look continues to dominate the hair scene.

HIGH PONY

You can see high ponytails on the frescoes of Ancient Greece, but they reemerged with “material girls” of the 80s …and the “grande” style still endures in (and out of) the music world.

BEACHY WAVES

Curls have been around forever, but the looser look turned into an utter phenomenon in the 21st century – thanks to big-barrel curling irons, mermaid stylers, and products (like Joico’s Beach Shake) that embrace undone texture.
