STEP OUTSIDE
We don’t mean nature (although that’s a brilliant way to boost the joi factor); we mean shifting your focus from your inner needs to those of others. According to experts at the Cleveland Clinic, a chemical response takes place in the body when you do something nice: Whether it’s a lending a helping hand or making a charitable donation, your brain secretes serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin –combined, they regulate mood, boost pleasure, and create a sense of connection with others.

MAKE A JOI LIST
Remembering what makes you happy when you’re in the midst of stress or chaos, can be tough. Mindfulness expert and author, Julie Potiker, suggests compiling a “joy list” of activities that you can reach for in times of struggle – actions that routinely bring you to a calmer internal space.

GET SCENT-IMENTAL
What we smell is an undeniably powerful mood-booster. In fact, studies show that 75 percent of emotions are actually triggered by smell; which is why catching a whiff of something nostalgic (your grandpa’s pipe tobacco; fresh cut grass; someone’s perfume) evokes instant good feels. Ways to surround yourself with those sensory power tools?

- Brew tea
- Light a candle
- Diffuse your room
- Spray your pillow
- Bake something delicious
- Open your windows and breathe deeply
