April 22nd may be designated as the official celebration of Earth Day; but at Joico, we work to help protect our planet year-round. Want to know what we’re up to? Let’s show you….
WE GIVE BACK TO OUR WORLD
In a commitment to serve our local community, Joico applied for a “Making an Impact on Tomorrow” grant through our parent company, Henkel North America, and donated $3,000.00 USD in 2023 to benefit Heal the Bay, an environmental advocacy group devoted to coastal protection in the Los Angeles area. Heal the Bay is “committed to raising awareness about choosing reusable options over single-use plastic and keeping our waterways clean, safe, and beautiful for everyone.”

Keeping high-quality food out of landfills helps those in need and helps our environment. With this in mind, Joico employees volunteered with Los Angeles Regional Food Bank (LARFB), part of the Feeding America network, and prepared 1,196 kits for food-insecure individuals and families in 2023. We also joined our greater Henkel North America Employee Resource Group’s volunteer day at LARFB to prepare 2,712 additional kits.
But sustainability is not just about plastic waste and nature conservation; it’s also about using our resources efficiently and decreasing waste in other areas, like food. According to Feeding America, “In the United States, people waste 80 million tons of food every year, which equals 149 billion meals. They throw away over $444 billion worth of food annually…. [and] waste 38% of all the food in America.”

WE PACKAGE WITH CARE FOR OUR PROS

Our Vero K-PAK Color, LumiShine Color, and Blonde Life hair-color tubes are packed in paperboard cartons made from 100% recycled fiber. These paperboard cartons have been diverted from the waste stream, and are 100% recyclable. Our plastic bottles for Joico’s shampoos and various sprays are proudly manufactured in-house and in the U.S.A. at our Beauty Care Hair Professional Manufacturing plant in Geneva, New York, and use up to 25% post-consumer recycled materials (PCR).
WE LAUNCHED A CLEAN, SUSTAINABLE HAIRCARE LINE
With the launch of Inner Joi, we created a way to help you take care of your hair and your world at the same time. This line of earth-friendly haircare – which includes three highly targeted collections and stylers – is 100% vegan, and developed with clean, animal-test-free, cruelty-free ingredients. Even the packaging is sustainable (the shampoo and conditioner bottles are made using 95% Social Plastic® from Plastic Bank®); and using them actually gives back to communities in need, helps reduce the carbon footprint, and makes a positive impact on the planet. (More on that, below.)
WE’VE PARTNERED WITH SOCIAL PLASTIC®

This globally recognized thought leader, advocate, and innovator in plastic recycling partners with progressive companies – like Joico – to steward the collection of ocean-bound plastic. The recycled plastic is reborn as Social Plastic® feedstock and used in the production of products and packaging – thus helping create new life for old plastic. Collection members exchange plastic waste as currency at local Plastic Bank branches for bonuses that help provide basic family necessities, such as groceries, cooking fuel, school tuition, health insurance, digital connectivity, and fintech services. By offering safe, secure, and traceable sources of income, Plastic Bank empowers communities in vulnerable areas with a path out of poverty. For more info, go to www.plasticbank.com
WE INVEST IN WIND ENERGY

Joico has invested in wind energy for our Beauty Care Manufacturing Site in Geneva, New York U.S.A. Our on-site microgrid (wind turbines) generate 20% of the electrical requirements for the site, and the balance of electricity is 100% green purchased. We continue to refine and develop our strategy to ensure the U.S. based production is clean and sustainable driving our carbon footprint.
