Featuring Joico Master Artist, Kyle Miller

“My client is an on-the-go mother with three young kids,” explains Joico Master Artist, Kyle Miller, who instinctively knew this multi-tasking mom’s color had to be low maintenance. The result? A gorgeous and gilded brunette shade that Kyle created with the rejuvenating power of YouthLock Permanent Color, formulated with collagen.
“This client had not colored her hair since she was in college. And although I wanted to keep the look low maintenance, I also wanted to add a little pizazz, rather than just do her base color,” says Kyle. Interestingly, the shift towards manageable, minimal-upkeep hair color is on the rise. “I feel that a majority of my clients have slowly transitioned into more “low maintenance” looks since the pandemic. And this Golden Brunette Halo is perfect, because the base color only needs to be touched up every six-to-eight weeks; while the halo of highlights – which is super-trendy right now – only needs a touch-up at every other appointment.”
The beauty of this technique: minimal work + big payoff…
“A halo highlight can be added onto any coloring service and takes minimal time. Plus, it focuses on what the client notices the most; the hair they see in the mirror around their face. It adds brightness around both the face and collarbone,” explains Kyle.
It’s super wearable…
“This is a very universal color and placement technique. My client has naturally curly hair – and this technique transitions from smooth to curly beautifully. The base color can be adjusted to suit the client’s complexion. The halo highlight placement can be adjusted to add more lightness around the face if desired.”
And it seriously revitalizes “tired” hair…
Kyle includes YouthLock shades in his formula, Joico’s permanent color line that’s formulated with collagen. Designed to renew the look and feel of hair, both inside and out, with bounce, softness, and resilience; it offers 100% gray coverage; bond-building ArgiPlex Technology, and gleaming, gorgeous signature shine.

Kyle’s color step-by-steps…
1. Apply Formula 1 to regrowth area. Drag it about 2” from the scalp. PRO TIPS: Start the application by parting the hair from the front hairline to the nape, creating two equal halves of the head. Then, take horizontal partings from the hairline and connect to the first divided parting. This will help speed up application time. Use a wide-tooth comb around the hairline to tame shorter hairs and make sure they are covered.
2. To create the sectioning for the halo foils, take a 2 – 3” wide curved section, starting at the client’s natural part, following the hairline. Connect the two partings at the first parting (which is made in the nape when the base color is applied). You can also subdivide these sections over the ear.
3. In the halo parting of the front quadrant, take a diagonal-back slice, and using a medium weave (5 – 6 weaves), apply Formula 2. Feather up to the scalp area to soften the line of demarcation. PRO TIP: Be sure to adjust the thickness of your weave to the hair type you’re working on. This model has curly hair, so Kyle didn’t want to use a fine weave, as it would have made the line of demarcation more noticeable when hair is worn naturally curly.
4. Repeat this twice more in the halo parting of the front quadrant. You should now have a total of 3 foils in this section. This can also be adjusted to your client’s liking or to density of hair. The more foils you have in the halo, the more lightness you will see.
5. Repeat steps 4 and 5 in the remaining halo sections on the head. You will have 12 – 15 foils total if you are using 3 foils in each quadrant’s halo section. If the client parts their hair to one side, it’s okay to subdivide the larger front section in order to get your section to fit in the foil.
6. Apply Formula 3 to the remaining hair that’s not foiled. Don’t forget to apply color to the hair between the foils as well.
7. Process for 35 minutes. Rinse and shampoo with YouthLock Shampoo formulated with collagen. Rinse. PRO TIP: Use Vero K-PAK Stainless Color Stain Remover on a towel around the hairline before using shampoo or water. “This is my tried-and-true method of getting even the most stubborn color stains off skin!” says Kyle.
8. Apply Formula 4 from scalp to ends. Process for 20 minutes. Rinse, shampoo again, and rinse once more.
9. Apply Joico YouthLock’s Treatment Masque. Let sit for 5 minutes. Rinse. PRO TIP: “I love to give my client a 5-minute scalp massage while they have a hair masque on. It’s relaxing and it’s a great way to set yourself apart from other stylists!”
