Celebrating Black History Month… Texture, Technique, & Words of Wisdom

Featuring Joico Global Technical Director, Jeannetta Walker-Rodgers

“Black History Month is always time for me to reflect and pay homage to our Ancestors, and relish in their bravery,” says Joico Global Technical Director, Jeannetta Walker-Rodgers, who created a beautiful, rich-brunette look on textured hair that she’s sharing today; along with some insightful wisdom in honor of BHM. Come learn the technique and hear our uber-talented pro talk about the importance of remembrance and representation.

“This is also a time of education for me, as I actively seek to learn more about the history of Black people across the globe, and their contributions to the world. Actually, it’s not a month-long celebration. It’s every day for me. It keeps me going and keeps me inspired.”

Here’s Jeannetta’s advice to YOU…

Be seen. Be heard. Put your work out there, and never forget to show YOU. Our representation matters. If no one knows who is behind the work, we can’t inspire those coming up behind us. They have to SEE us. Don’t be afraid to let the world know the genius behind your work, whatever it is you do is as a Black Person.”
Realizing that the work in our industry to continue Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is nowhere near done can be daunting at times. Downright discouraging. I actively choose to focus on what we, as a collective, have accomplished; and the people and lives we have touched to stay inspired to continue the work. We won’t stop!”

How she inspires US with her work…

She’s all about teaching others to work confidently with texture; and this gray-coverage look is a perfect example. “I wanted to give my client a beautiful, rich brunette and gray coverage without the harsh line of demarcation as her natural gray hair grows out,” says Jeannetta. “Dimensional brunettes are ON right now!”

Why a demi-permanent formula?

“Most people reach for permanent color for gray coverage — even in a tone-on-tone situation,” explains Jeannetta. “But permanent color isn’t always necessary: Gray hair will process to whatever tone and level you put on it because it’s white.” And what happens to the pepper? “Due to the nature of a demi-permanent having no lift, it will enrich, and sometimes darken the base, instantly giving dimensional results.” In fact, this strategy even makes grow-out easier. “If your guest ever decides to go lighter, the transition from brunette will be easier on a base of demi permanent color.”

These pro tips are key…

Glide power is everything:“Make sure the hair is detangled and prepped before the color service.”
No wimpy tools:“Use clips with plenty of tension to hold sections, and brush- bristles that are not too soft when applying color.”
Protect, protect, protect:“If silking the hair out afterwards, thermal heat protection for the blow dry and heat styling is a MUST. It’s actually non-negotiable,” says Jeannetta, who used YouthLock Blowout Crème and Heat Hero on her client here.
