HONOR ROLE

There were so many reasons we honored Gaga’s Oscar-nominated hair hero, Frederic Aspiras, earlier this month in Beverly Hills. But perhaps none as important as the work he’s doing to represent the Asian community on an international stage. As we celebrate Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month, come find out how – and why — Frederic is inspiring global change….

Frederic’s work on the biopic film, House of Gucci, starring long-time client, Lady Gaga, is nothing short of mesmerizing. And it’s no real surprise that this pro of Vietnamese-Filipino descent is only the second Asian hairdresser ever to be nominated for an Oscar in the category of makeup and hairstyling. He recently told E! News what this recognition meant to him. “It’s sparked such an importance and responsibility in me that goes beyond this award, and that is representation.” Today, we’re continuing the conversation….

Joico:

We’d love to hear your thoughts about changes in the industry towards people of Asian descent. Are you seeing or sensing progress?

Frederic:

“I'm sensing people are hearing the voices of the Asian Community more, but do I think they are listening? Maybe, maybe not. Violence towards women of Asian descent is at an all-time high and it is extremely concerning. There needs to be more change in the way some people view Asians. We aren’t just immigrants or refugees, we are kind, loving and hard working. We have roots in this country that dates back to the development and building of America.”

Joico:

And given what you’re seeing, can you tell us what you’re personally doing to help enact change?

Frederic:

“My role as an Asian-American in this day and age is to educate and inform. I’d like to be a role model for the younger Asian generation, and show that with hard work, anything is possible; that you, too, can create your own path. I hope that my impact in this world positively affects someone.”

Joico:

What impact do honors – like your Oscar nomination – have on society?

Frederic:

“Being only the second person of Asian descent to ever be nominated in my category for Hair and Makeup at the Academy Awards this year has really impacted the way I view receiving an award. This honor will not just affect myself, but so many Asians around the world. I am truly honored and know that there is more work to be done till we make representations of Asians in this country more than just a milestone.”

Stay tuned for more of Frederic’s exciting – and change-making – work, as we continue to share his creative genius, his philosophy, and the groundbreaking spirit of Frederic’s commitment to his cultural heritage….
