Joico Celebrity Guest Artist George Papanikolas of the Andy Lecompte Salon in Beverly Hills jetted to New York, recently, to coif models for Monarchy at New York Fashion Week. According to Monarchy designer David Cardona, his collection for fall 2009 was inspired by a trip to the U.K. that was dominated by equestrian competitions. The result was an array of rider-inspired waistcoats, plaid and paisley ties, military influenced leather jackets and double-breasted trenches for men and high waisted jodhpurs, high-collared shirts and trench coats paired with equestrian boots for women.
In keeping with the modern equestrian style of the show, Papanikolas created sleek, low ponytails for the women. Several models sported riding hats, and in these cases, the tails were pulled to one side. In every instance, notes Papanikolas, the objective was to produce healthy, loose, soft textures. To obtain the workable hold required, the stylist turned to Joico’s Design Collection Flexible Shaping Spray. “It was the ideal tool,” notes Papanikolas, “for keeping these sleek styles in place and keeping them soft and natural.”
The stylist describes the men’s hair as 1940’s-inspired. He was asked to produce extremely polished, high-gloss shapes, with a slight pompadour effect in front. “Design Collection Forming Polish was absolutely perfect,” Papanikolas reveals. “This product really created the shape we needed. It’s a great product—you get soft, flexible hold with no flaking or build-up.”
