1. How do you breakdown a haircut to suit a client?
There’s many things to consider: hair texture, face shape, lifestyle, suitability, and the overall desired end result, whether it is realistic and achievable. You have to turn on your seventh sense. A stylist, has to be in-tune to all of that. You must gather information and arrive at something that is suitable for the client. What’s beautiful to one person may not be beautiful to another. Before diving in, evaluate.

2. Philosophy of the company?
As an artist, it’s important that the client have great healthy hair to start with. Anything can be created within reason when your client has beautifully, conditioned hair. I like Joico’s philosophy on technology, and vision because it is good for me the hairdresser and even better for my clients – Healthy Hair regardless of what is happening in fashion is always beautiful.

3. You make it look so easy, how do you know what to do and how to do it?
You have to think of technique. If you have a great understanding of technique anything is possible. For example, if you know how to layer hair, if you know how to graduate hair, and if you know how to cut one length hair, you have a true understanding of the technical aspect of cutting hair. On the opposite side, there’s the creative elements or thought process -this is based on trend, on the client that you are working on, and the overall look you are trying to achieve. You have to combine both – technique and creativity.

4. Where do you get your ideas from?
Ideas come in many forms, shapes and ways. Something may be calculated and planned, or something that just comes to your mind. Inspiration comes from fashion, magazines, movies, theatre, society, and the list goes on. I think to be inspired, one has to be aware of many of things, if you blink, you miss a decade. Fashion is not so dictatorial anymore, it’s about being an individual and expressing that. What I have to do, is look at the world around me, digest it, and absorb it. Also by being aware of world trends, ultimately passing that on and inspiring the hairdresser and the client.

5. How can I improve my skills?
You can improve your skills in many ways. There’s going to a private academy or classes within the industry. There’s practicing the techniques on your own time by practicing in the evening with a model. Find or choose a mentor, that you can learn from. Be honest about your weaknesses, and approach them full on. Some ground work, some practice and studying will only make you better at the trade. The fashion, beauty and hairdressing industry is constantly evolving. As hairdressers, we must always evolve our techniques to stay current.

6. If I was stranded and I could only choose four products, what would they be?
One would be to cleanse and condition the hair and give me flexibility, condition and moisture, my option would be Silk Result. The driest most dullest, beat up hair transforms into radiant beautiful hair.

No matter what style, length of hair or texture, I would use a good foundational product, in other words, I can straighten, curl or add body to the hair, this would be JoiLotion. I can curl the hair, dry the hair giving it pliability and manipulate the hair, yet it still feels soft without weight, without dulling and without stickyness.

My third product would be to add more shine – that would be K-PAK Protect & Shine Serum. Lightweight, clean, pure with natural shine. It is workable on any hair texture, length and any style.

Finally, a finishing spray, workable spray – this would be K-PAK Protective Hair Spray. It’s brushable. I can spray it directly on the hair. I can spray it on my hands and work into the hair. It’s the ultra-modern, lightweight hairspray, perfect for setting any style.

7. When I want to change the hair texture, appearance, feel of the hair, to create very defined looks what products would I choose?
The I-C-E Hair Line provides different looks - separation, matte finish, and if you want superior hold than the I-C-E Hair line is where its at. My favorites in the I-C-E line are:
  • Distortion, which is a styling gum — great for adding texture, definition without a waxy flat feel.
  • Spiker Blast — if I want to get the hair to defy gravity, even the thickest heaviest hair will lift away from the head.
  • Reactor — the unique product that turns into many different creations by shaping, it morphs with the hair. It's the finish, the end result that the I-C-E products are perfect for.
I love the finishes that I can get with ICE — hard, matte, semi — shiny. It's about extreme and about the individual creative expression of the hairdresser and the client.
